Hi everyone! My name is Syd, and I’m the Front End Manager here at the Kitchener Academy of Music. Even though I work at a music school, I’ve actually never taken music lessons before- can you believe that? So I figured now is as good a time as any to get started! Join me as I take music lessons with some of our amazing teachers. So far I’ve
taken Violin, Guitar, and Vocal lessons! You can read all about them HERE!
Today, I took a guitar lesson with Travis! Since I had already taken a guitar lesson with Andrew I already knew a few of the basics. I was excited to learn some more about the guitar, and build on what I learned in my last guitar lesson. Travis started off by reviewing some of the things I learned in my lesson with Andrew, such as the different strings and how to properly hold the guitar. Since I had already learned some of the notes, Travis decided to teach me about chords. A chord is basically when you play a bunch of notes at once to make a new sound! There are a lot of songs that can be played by only learning a few chords, because a lot of music uses the same ones.
Travis decided to teach me the chords to “If I Had A Million Dollars” by the Barenaked Ladies. I learned 3 different chords, and then spent a lot of time practicing how to switch from one to another quickly. This was a fun challenge for me! Travis drew out all the chords for me so I could easily remember which was which, and then all I had to do was switch between them quickly enough. We finished up the lesson by going over a new strumming pattern, and then I played the song! Granted, I did play it pretty slowly because I was still figuring out the chords, but for my second lesson I’m pretty proud of myself!
