Music Lessons FAQ

tkaminfo

Thanks to the KW community - our local studio is growing FAST! For those who are considering lessons with us, we've compiled a list of our frequently asked questions for you.

Have a question that isn't answered here? Shoot us an email at tkaminfo@gmail.com and we will be more than happy to help!

How old should my child be before they start lessons?

We typically recommend the ages listed below, but we can start slightly younger if they are very eager!

  • Intro to Music: 4-6

  • Vocal: 4+

  • Piano: 5+

  • Violin: 5+

  • Drums: 6+

  • Guitar: 7+

Can I sit in on lessons with my child?

Yes, we have an open door policy!

Do you offer adaptive lessons for my special needs child?

While we do have many special needs & neurodivergent students here at TKAM, we want to make sure that we are the right fit for you!

Would you be looking for regular music lessons, or adaptive music or music therapy lessons? While all of our lessons are private (one on one) lessons structured around each student's needs, we do not offer adaptive lessons at this time.

If you're looking for adaptive lessons, or something more along the lines of music therapy, that's not something we're able to offer at this time. We hope to be able to offer this in the future!

Can I have a varying lesson time from week to week? Can I only take lessons two weeks each month?

We currently aren't able to offer lessons on alternating weeks, or vary your lesson time; our lessons occur at the same time from week to week.

However, there is no long-term commitment as our lessons are invoiced month to month!

Can I do a trial lesson?

We don't offer trial lessons at this time, but our lessons run monthly so there's no long term commitment!

Can we do hour long lessons/45 minute lessons?

Yes, we do offer longer lessons upon request! But we find that with our younger students, it’s best to start with 30 minutes and work your way up from there.

For our older students or adult students, longer lessons are a fantastic way to go more in depth and learn even more!

Can I take lessons with my kid/sibling/parent?

No, all of our lessons are private, one on one lessons.

We do this so that our teachers can work with each student individually to help them achieve their own personal goals!

However, we can certainly look to book you in for simultaneous lessons with different teachers, or back-to-back lessons with the same teacher!

Do I need my own instrument for lessons?

Short answer- yes! In order to progress in lessons (and continue practicing at home!) you will need your own instrument.

However, if you just want to try out the instrument for a couple of months, renting as opposed to buying an instrument can be a great option! Our studio is happy to connect you with some rental recommendations or retail recommendations.

We also do have some instruments on site that you can use during your first lesson or two, while you work to purchase/rent your own instrument. Contact us for more information!

Where are your lessons held?

Our lessons are held at our studio location at 10 Pioneer Drive (the intersection of Pioneer & Homer Watson).

If you would prefer to take lessons from your own home, we would recommend trying Zoom lessons!

Should I do in person lessons, or Zoom?

That’s up to you! Zoom lessons can be a great way to learn an instrument from the comfort of your home.

However, for young students (or beginners), learning in person can be a bit easier as it allows for the teacher to more clearly see things such as your posture, hand positioning, and more.

If you aren’t sure which option works best for you- try both! We have many students who learn primarily in person, but utilize Zoom lessons as a way to keep up with classes when they’re out of town, or if they’re feeling under the weather & want to stay home to avoid getting anyone else sick!
